BA LL.B

The Bachelor of Arts - Bachelor of Legislative Law (BA LLB) course is an integrated law degree that the law aspirants can pursue right after qualifying their Class 12th examinations. The law degree is an integration of Arts and Law subjects and is of five-years duration. Therefore, as part of the BA LLB course, the candidates study subjects including Economics, History, Political Science, Sociology along with law subjects like Civil Law, Criminal Law, Labour Law, Tax Law, Administrative Law, Corporate Law, Patent Law etc. The course-curriculum of BA LLB degree is such that law, as well as, the arts subjects, are included in each semester. Moreover, candidates are taught about law case studies, moot courts, law internships, seminars and interactions with retired judges from High courts and the Supreme Court of India. 

BA LLB course requires aspirants to be hardworking and extremely thorough in their subject. Some key skills that aspirants should possess in order to perform well in BA LLB course are fluency, ability to work long hours, good judgement of situation/people, hard working, interest in research, intellectual capabilities, Convincing power, clarity of speech, objectivity, persuasiveness, confidence, integrity in words and deeds, ability to assimilate and analyse facts, good presentation skills, etc.

No candidate will be admitted to the course unless he or she has passed the Higher Secondary Examination of the Government of Kerala or any other examination recognized as equivalent thereto by this University with not less than 45% marks for general category, 42% for OBC and 40% marks for SC and ST.

REGULATIONS RELATING TO INTEGRATED FIVE YEAR BA. LL.B DEGREE COURSE

(2020 Admission onwards)

Duration of the Course

(a) The course shall be of a double degree integrated course comprising BA and LL.B Degrees. The Bachelor’s Degree in BA and Law consists of a regular course of study for a minimum period of 10 Semesters in Five Years and includes 14 papers in BA and 31 papers in Law.

(b) Each semester is structured in 90 instructional days having 5 hours per day for lectures, seminars, debates and tests. There shall be not less than four hours per subject per week and one/two hours for seminar/debates/test paper/additional classes.

4. Eligibility for Admission

(a) No candidate will be admitted to the course unless he has passed the Higher Secondary Examination of the Government of Kerala or any other examination recognized as equivalent thereto by this University with not less than 45% marks for general category, 42% for OBC and 40% marks for SC and ST.

5. Attendance and Progress

No candidate shall be permitted to register for the end semester examinations conducted by the University unless the Principal has certified that he has obtained not less than 75% of the attendance in each paper and his conduct and progress has been satisfactory.

6. Examinations

(a) There will be a University examination at the end of each semester. Each written paper carrying 100 Marks is divided into 80 Marks for written examination and 20 Marks for internal assessment.

 (c) Internship – Each student shall have completed minimum of 20 weeks internship during the entire period of legal studies under NGO, Trial and Appellate Advocates, Judiciary, Legal Regulatory authorities, Legislatures and Parliament, Other Legal Functionaries, Market Institutions, Bank, Stock exchanges, Law Firms, Companies, Local Self Government and other such bodies where law is practised either in action or in dispute resolution or in management.

 Internship cannot be for a continuous period of more than four weeks and at least one internship is mandatory for  all students  in the entire academic period with Trial and Appellate Advocates. Internship shall be done without affecting the regular classes.

Each student shall maintain an internship diary and the same shall be evaluated by the Guide in Internship and also a Core Faculty member.

(e) External Viva-voce examination in the Tenth semester shall be conducted by the Board of Examiners constituted by the University.

7. Internal Assessment

Twenty marks in each subject are earmarked for internal assessment and shall be distributed as follows:

  1. Attendance  - 5 marks. ( 2.5 marks for 75% of attendance and additional 0.5 Marks for every 5% attendance above 75%)
  2. Tests     - 5 Marks
  3. Assignment  - 5 marks

Seminar        - 5 marks                                                 

The teacher concerned is the sole authority in awarding internal marks assessing the performance and attendance of the student. The internal marks will be published and finalized after considering the students about their complaints, if any.

Two tests will be conducted for each subject in a semester and the average will be the mark for the test paper. The date of the examination will be notified earlier.

Every student shall write one assignment for each subject on a topic assigned by the teacher concerned. The assignment shall be submitted as per the direction of the teacher.

Every student shall present a paper for each subject in the class on a subject assigned by the teacher.

8. Semester Examination

Semester examination will be conducted by the university. In order to have a pass in the semester examination, the candidate has to secure minimum 50% marks for each subject. If the candidate fails to secure minimum 50% marks in internship, project and viva-voce, he/she has to complete the internship, project and viva-voce in the next academic year without obtaining re-admission. Maximum period allowed to complete the course shall be ten semesters plus four semesters from the date of admission. 

Maximum five days study leave will be given for regular examinations and no study leave for supplementary examinations.

Those who are attending other offices, chamber of advocates and courts on account of project, internship, chamber work and court practice will get attendance for the days assigned by the teacher concerned.

A candidate who obtains pass marks (50%) in one or more papers, but fails in other papers in a semester is exempted from appearing in the papers in which he/she has obtained pass marks.

The candidate shall compulsorily attend all the components of all practical papers.

There shall be no chance to improve either the internal assessment marks or written examination marks.

Classification of results is as shown below:-

Distinction – 80% and above

First Class - 60% and above, but below 80%

Second Class-50% and above, but below 60%

Ranking shall be done on the basis of the marks obtained by the candidate in the whole examination (Ten semesters) passed in the first chance. First class shall also be awarded to candidates who passed the whole examinations with 60% or above along with the immediate junior batch and not thereafter.

A candidate admitted to this course shall complete the course and shall pass all papers within a period of ten semesters plus four semesters from the date of admission.

9. Publication of Results

The results of the Tenth semester examination shall be published only after the candidate has passed the First, Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, Eighth and Ninth semester examinations.

10. Award of Degree

A candidate who successfully completes all the Ten semesters shall be eligible for the award of B.A.,LL.B/B.B.A.,LL.B/ B.Com.,LL.B Degree respectively from the faculty of Law, University of Kerala.

11. Prohibition against lateral entry and exit

There shall be no lateral entry on the plea of graduation in any subject or exit by way of awarding a degree splitting the integrated double degree course, at any intermediary stage of integrated double degree course.

12. B.B.A Project

All students are to carry out a project work either individually or in a group of not more than 5 under the supervision of a teacher. The project work may commence in the 7th semester. The report of the project shall be submitted to the College in duplicate before the completion of the 8th semester. There shall be no internal assessment for project work. A board of two examiners appointed by the University shall evaluate the report of the project work. The viva-voce based on the project report shall be conducted individually. The maximum marks for the evaluation of the project shall be 100, distributed among the following components of project evaluation.
