Event Title
Intercollegiate Debate Competition
Theme: International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict
Date: November 4, 2024
Time: 10:00 AM – 12:30 PM
Venue: Mar Gregorios College of Law
Objective:
The debate competition aims to promote awareness on the issue of environmental exploitation during war and armed conflict, in line with the theme of the **International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict**. Through this event, we seek to engage college students in thoughtful discourse, encourage critical thinking, and foster a sense of responsibility toward environmental preservation, especially during times of conflict.
Event Format:
Teams: Each team will consist of two members.
Rounds:
Qualifying Round
Topic: "Should environmental damage during war be considered a war crime?"
Time: 10:00 AM - 11:15 AM
Final Round
Topic: "Is the exploitation of the environment in armed conflict an inevitable consequence of war?"
- Time: 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM
Registration:
Fee: Rs. 100 per team
Deadline: Registration closes on November 02 , 2024. No spot registration.
Prizes:
1st Place: Rs. 5000
2nd Place: Rs. 3000
3rd Place: Rs. 2000
Rules and Guidelines:
1. Team Composition: Each team must consist of 2 members from the same institution. Medium : Malayalam
2. Format:
- Each debate will follow the “Oxford-Style debate” format.
- Teams will be assigned either the proposition or opposition stance by a draw of lots.
3. Time Allotment:
- Speakers: Each speaker will have 5 minutes to present their argument, followed by 2 minutes for rebuttal.
- Qualifying Round: The best 4 teams will move on to the final round.
4. Judgment Criteria:
- Content and Relevance (25%)
- Clarity and Articulation (25%)
- Team Coordination (20%)
- Rebuttal (20%)
- Overall Presentation (10%)
5. Final Round:
- The top 4 teams from the qualifying round will participate.
- The debate will be judged by a panel of experts in the fields of law, environmental studies, and international relations.
6. Code of Conduct:
- Teams must maintain decorum and respect the opinions of their opponents.
- Any form of misconduct or disruption will lead to disqualification.
- Use of offensive language or personal attacks will lead to immediate disqualification.
7. Decision of the Judges: The decision of the judges will be final and binding.
